Premier League - Late Mulumbu winner gives West Brom victory at Swansea
Youssouf Mulumbu, West Bromwich Albion
Premier League, Liberty Stadium - Swansea City 1 (Lamah 2’) West Bromwich Albion 2 (Sessegnon 52’ Mulumbu 85’)
West Brom secured a dramatic 2-1 victory at Swansea City with Youssouf Mulumbu scoring the winner.
The opening goal came after just two minutes when Roland Lamah received Wilfried’s ball down the left wing, turned Steven Reid on the byline, and curled in a great finish past Ben Foster.
It could have been two on 17 minutes when Bony met Lama’s cross at the near post, only to find Foster in his path. Bony then volleyed wide after chesting down a corner.
West Brom were awful in the first half but early in the second period they shocked Swansea when Stephane Sessegnon blasted in an equaliser from 25 yards with a great strike.
On 62 minutes, Swansea had a strong penalty appeal turned down when Jonathan De Guzman’s volley struck Gareth McAuley’s raised arm. De Guzman went close ten minutes later with a well-struck shot blocked by Foster’s legs.
Then, with five minutes left, Youssuf Mulumbu scored a brilliant winner, curling a shot into the goal from the edge of the box, sealing a remarkable improvement in the second half.
TALKING POINT
Can West Brom stay up? A woeful first half performance was transformed by a marked improvement in the second, but although that gave them victory, it did not suggest that West Brom will be able to win enough matches against better opposition. Other sides will punish them at their worst and be able to defend against their best.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion): In a game where few impressed, Ben Foster made important saves against Wilfried Bony in the first half to keep his side in the match when they appeared utterly hopeless.
