Championship: Huddersfield v Reading preview

Huddersfield v Reading preview

The Premier League awaits either Huddersfield or Reading as the two sides prepare to meet in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final on Bank Holiday Monday.

David Wagner and Jaap Stam will send their sides into battle at Wembley, live on Sky Sports, knowing just one more win will be enough for the Royals to bag a return to the top flight for the first time since 2013, while Huddersfield have been waiting for 45 years.

Huddersfield have no new injury worries and Wagner could pick the same side that saw off Sheffield Wednesday in the second leg of their semi-final at Hillsborough.

Danny Ward will retain his place in goal after returning from suspension for the second leg, and he could be making his final appearance for the club alongside fellow loanees Aaron Mooy and Izzy Brown.

Reading captain Paul McShane remains absent through suspension, with Tiago Ilori set to retain his place in their defence.

Jordan Obita has been struggling with an ankle problem but Stam is hopeful he'll be fit in time for the game.

Huddersfield boss David Wagner says "There'll be no secrets on Monday. Jaap and I have also met before twice in friendlies with Dortmund and Ajax's second teams when he was their assistant.

"We know what to expect from Reading and they know what to expect from us. For us, it's very important to stick to our identity and be focused. Reading play very decent football and we have to make everything right to be successful. We have to leave our comfort zone and this is what my group will do for sure."

Reading boss Jaap Stam and Huddersfield boss David Wagner spoke to the EFL Weekly podcast ahead of the Championship play-off final...

Stam: "Wembley is always a special occasion. It's a great pitch and stadium and a lot of fans will be there. As a player, you need to enjoy that.

"I'm very proud already in spite of the result. It'd be nice if we can have a good score but these games are always tight. We know we're playing a very good team who can play in possession, have pace up front and are confident on the ball. We know we need to work very hard to get a result and make it difficult for them."
