Bakary Sako of Crystal Palace celebrates with Andros Townsend
Bakary Sako's first half header helped Crystal Palace progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at Selhurst park.
The Eagles registered a much needed victory and the first under Roy Hodgson after a tight encounter saw the hosts edge past Huddersfield into the next round of the League Cup.
It was the 13th minute when Andros Townsend put in a corner that found Sako who took advantage of some poor marking from the Terriers to head home from close range to register Palace's first goal since 22nd August and Sako's first since August 2015.
The hosts enjoyed the better of the play and chances in the first half including when with ten minutes until the break a slick Palace passing move found Townsend however his effort was straight at the Huddersfield goalkeeper.
The visitors did have the odd moment of joy in the first half with Elias Kachunga missing a glorious chance on 21 minutes when he blazed over from six yards out.
The newly promoted Premier League side showed much better form in the second half.
Kachunga again had a good effort on 52 minutes with an effort from outside the box but it just missed the target to the right hand side of the Palace goal. Rajiv van La Parra also had a good effort just after the restart with a long range shot which forced a low save from Julian Speroni.
With the game needing a result on the night The Eagles did enough to avoid potential extra time and penalties and almost made the game safe with eight minutes to go when goalscorer Sako had his header from close range blocked.
