Michy Batshuayi earns three points late on

Michy Batshuayi scored a 94th-minute winner as Chelsea defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Champions League Group C at Wanda Metropolitano.

Antonio Conte’s men went into the game on the back of their convincing opening 6-0 win against Qarabag on September 12.

However, they faced a much sterner test against an Atletico side who were playing their first Champions League game at their new stadium having drawn 0-0 at Roma in the first match. And despite enjoying the better of the opening half, Chelsea went behind when Antoine Griezmann converted from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time.

However, Alavro Morata equalised just before the hour before substitute Batshuayi grabbed a winning goal with the last kick of the game to put Chelsea top of the group on a maximum six points.

Atletico Madrid came out of the blocks quickly but it was Chelsea who had a couple of early chances to take the lead.

Eden Hazard twice set up Morata who fired wide of the mark and, sandwiched in between on six minutes, the Belgium international hit a right-foot effort just wide.

Hazard went even closer on 13 minutes when he hit a lovely strike from around 25 yards which smacked off the post with Jan Oblak beaten.

Chelsea went close again on 24 minutes David Luiz clipped a wonderful 45-yard diagonal cross into the Atletico area and picked out Morata whose looping header was well saved by Oblak who tipped the ball over his own crossbar. However, it was Atletico who took the lead in the 40th minute when Luiz was guilty of a silly shirt-pulling foul on Lucas Hernandez in the area and Griezmann stepped up to convert his penalty past Thibaut Courtois.

It should have been 2-0 before the interval when Courtois could only parry a Koke strike into the path of Saul who somehow fired the rebound wide from 12 yards. Atletico were made to pay for that miss when Chelsea finally made their pressure pay when they levelled on 59 minutes when Morata got up to meet a Hazard cross into the area from the left and got just enough on his header to guide it past Oblak.

Chelsea should have gone ahead on 62 minutes when Hazard was again the architect as he put in a low cross which Cesc Fabregas stabbed wide on the stretch. Morata got put through into the area by Hazard on 74 minutes and, with just Oblak to beat, he toe-poked his effort past the advancing keeper but just wide of the post.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw until the fourth minute of stoppage time when the Blues snatched a massive three points. Marcos Alonso put a low cross in from the right wing and Batshuayi was on the spot to slam the ball past Oblak from six yards.
