EPL: Burnley 1-0 Newcastle United

Jeff Hendrick celebrates after scoring the only goal

Jeff Hendrick scored the only goal of the game as Burnley beat Newcastle 1-0 at Turf Moor to move up to seventh in the Premier League.

The Republic of Ireland international struck inside the final 20 minutes of the tight game to secure only a second home win of the season for the Clarets on the fifth anniversary of boss Sean Dyche’s arrival at the club.

Newcastle were disappointing throughout and created few chances as they missed an opportunity to move above Liverpool and into the league’s top six.

Indeed, Burnley jump above the Magpies with the win and into seventh on 16 points, while Rafael Benitez’s men drop to ninth on 14 points.

Burnley had a half-chance inside the opening minute when Nick Pope’s free-kick from deep inside his own half was flicked on by James Tarkowski for Hendrick who fired across the face of goal and wide of the far post.

The hosts continued to dominate the opening proceedings, but Newcastle had a chance from a 10th minute corner when the ball bounced down off Jack Cork and into the path of Christian Atsu who couldn’t keep his shot down as it sailed over the top of Pope’s goal.

On 17 minutes more patient Newcastle build-up play ended with Jonjo Shelvey being teed up by Atsu just outside the area but his fierce right-foot strike was down the throat of Pope who gathered.

Robbie Brady tried to catch out Robbie Elliot with a cheeky chip from the edge of the area in the 28th minute but the Newcastle goalkeeper managed to grab the ball just under his crossbar.

Brady turned supplier on 31 minutes with a cross in from the left which DeAndre Yedlin could only help into the middle but Ashley Barnes’ downward header was just wide of the post.

A first real attempt finally came in the 50th minute when Ayoze Perez got a sight of goal on the edge of the area and looked to curl his effort into the far corner, but Pope got across to his left to push the ball wide of the far corner.

Two minutes later and Burnley had an effort on target when a free-kick from the right, which drifted towards the back post, was met by the Tarkowski but he could only send his header into the hands of Elliot.

Both sides continued to struggle to find a breakthrough with Cork trying his luck from distance on 72 minutes but his effort deflected off Florian Lejeune and cleared Elliot’s crossbar.

Burnley broke the deadlock two minutes later when Elliott did well to parry a close-range Cork strike, but Johann Berg Gudmundsson pounced on the rebound and crossed to Hendrick at the back post where he brought it down before firing high into the net from close range.

Joselu went close to equalising in the 82nd minute when he collected a Yedlin pass on the edge of the area and fired a shot through the legs of Tarkowski but watched as it rolled just wide of Pope’s right-hand post.

Barnes almost put the icing on the cake in the 89th minute with a low strike inside the area, but Elliot pulled off a fine low save to deny him.

Pope then rescued Burnley in the third and final minute of stoppage time as he was at full stretch to push Isaac Hayden’s strike wide.

And from the subsequent corner, Jonjo Shelvey’s inswinging cross was headed over by Javier Manquillo.
