EPL: Newcastle United 1-1 Liverpool

Philippe Coutinho scored for Liverpool

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United despite Philippe Coutinho scoring a superb long-range effort at St James' Park.

Former Reds boss Rafa Benitez made two changes to his Magpies line-up, with Javier Manquillo and Jonjo Shelvey handed starts in place of Chancel Mbemba and Isaac Hayden.

The visitors showed two alterations to the side which won 3-2 at Leicester City, with Sadio Mane and Daniel Sturridge earning starting roles.

Mane passed up a shooting chance in the early stages following a quick break by Mohamed Salah, before a Sturridge chip floated harmlessly over the top.

Matt Ritchie responded by forcing a save from Simon Mignolet with a shot from the edge of the area, before Sturridge threatened again for the visitors and Mane volleyed wide of target.

The hosts then enjoyed a great escape as a Georginio Wijnaldum effort from a Coutinho corner struck the woodwork, before both Dejan Lovren and Mane were unable to force the loose ball home.

However, they fell behind soon after as Coutinho found space 25 yards from goal and fired in a right-footed shot which was almost past the stranded Rob Elliot before he dived to try and make the save.

The lead lasted just seven minutes, however, before Shelvey found Joselu and a touch from Joel Matip deflected on to the Spaniard and rolled past Mignolet and into the back of the net.

Early in the second half a Ciaran Clark let in Sturridge, his effort was saved by Elliot and Salah blazed the rebound over the bar.

Elliot then came to the rescue again as he denied Sturridge an eighth goal in eight games against the Magpies.
Both sides made changes as the game entered the final 20 minutes, with the pace of the play having dropped during the second half.

Shelvey was then in the right place to clear a Lovren header from close to the goal-line, while Dominic Solanke shot wide late on, before fellow substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain headed over.

Mohamed Diame then almost grabbed a winner for the home side in stoppage time, but he was denied to allow Mignolet to pounce on the loose ball.
