EPL: West Brom 2-2 Newcastle United

Ayoze Pérez of Newcastle United celebrates after Jonny Evans of West Bromwich Albion scores an own goal

Newcastle hit back from two-down to secure a 2-2 draw at West Brom to end a run of four straight Premier League defeats.

The Baggies, looking for a second home win of the season, seemed on course for the three points when goals either side of half-time from Hal Robson-Kanu and Sam Field’s first senior goal put them ahead.

Ciaran Clark quickly pulled one back before a Jonny Evans own goal seven minutes from time rescued a share of the spoils for Rafael Benitez’s Magpies.

The point moves the Baggies above Everton on goal difference in 16th, while Newcastle sit three points better off in 12th having stopped the rot.

Salomon Rondon had the first real attempt on 20 minutes with a speculative effort from 30 yards which almost eluded Karl Darlow as the ball clipped the top of his crossbar.

Newcastle went close just after the half-hour when Joselu headed just wide, but should have left the cross for Matt Ritchie who was better placed behind him.

On 38 minutes Ahmed Hegazi’s cross back into the area picked out Hal Robson-Kanu but his header was saved well by Darlow.

Four minutes later Robson-Kanu failed to get a clean connection on a Rondon cross and fired wide from close range.

Robson-Kanu was not to be denied as he put the Baggies in front in stoppage time as he met Kieran Gibbs’ superb cross into the area and headed past Darlow.

Newcastle went close to levelling on 52 minutes via Mikel Merino’s effort from the edge of the area which Ben Foster got down to his left to make a fine save.

The game burst into life with two goals in the space of three minutes when West Brom went two-up courtesy of Field’s cushioned volley at the back post to convert a Matt Phillips cross on 56 minutes.

But just before the hour Clark was left unmarked to head in a Ritchie corner from a couple of yards to get the Magpies back into the contest.

Robson-Kanu went close to restoring Albion’s two-goal cushion on 63 minutes after being set up by Jake Livermore but his effort was saved by Darlow.

Foster produced a great save to deny Ritche an equaliser when he got on the end of a Rolando Arrons cross on 70 minutes, but the offside flag was up so it wouldn’t have counted.

However, Newcastle sealed a deserved point on 83 minutes when Ritchie’s free-kick into the Albion area took a deflection off Rondon before the ball was diverted into the net off Evans.
