Dele Alli strikes as Spurs down lively Barnsley
Tottenham have advanced through to round four of the Carabao Cup thanks to Dele Alli's second half strike against Barnsley at Wembley.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side dominated the early exchanges in terms of possession and territory, but they struggled to create clear openings.
Set pieces were when Spurs looked at their most threatening, with Juan Foyth missing an early chance on his debut.
Fernando Llorente, on his full debu,t then missed an even better chance, when he headed Kieran Trippier’s corner wide from ten yards, despite being totally unmarked.
At the other end Barnsley also wasted a guilt-edge chance when defender Liam Lindsay headed Ryan Hedges cross wide when it was easier to score.
Into the second-half and Barnsley missed another chance when forward Ike Ugbo saw his half-volley saved well by Michel Vorm in the Spurs goal.
Spurs then came close when Harry Winks’ powerful effort was parried away in impressive fashion by Barnsley stopper Adam Davies.
However, Spurs were not to be denied on 65 minutes when Alli put them in front from close range after a good run and cross from Trippier.
Barnsley were unable to find a breakthrough in the time that remained and Spurs, with a rare win at Wembley, were able to hold on for the victory.
