EPL: Everton 3-2 Watford

Leighton Baines crashes controversial extra time penalty

Everton came from two goals down at home to Watford to win 3-2, with the Hornets missing a last-gasp spot-kick.

Toffees caretaker boss David Unsworth handed a full league debut to midfielder Beni Baningime, while the fit-again Michael Keane replaced Ashley Williams in central defence and Oumar Niasse started in attack.

The Hornets made two changes to the side beaten 1-0 by Stoke City last time out, with Will Hughes and Andre Gray replacing Etienne Capoue and Troy Deeney.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the early possession, before the Toffees started to pose something of a threat, although neither side was able to fashion a clear chance in the opening 15 minutes.

Leighton Baines was the first player to have a clear sight of goal with 22 minutes on the clock, but keeper Heurelho Gomes kept out his shot after a quick counter-attack by the hosts.

Tom Davies tried an audacious long-range effort just before the half-hour mark, while the Hornets huffed and puffed without any success.

However, they should have taken the lead five minutes before half-time when Richarlison raced clear and took the ball around keeper Jordan Pickford, only to shoot wide of the unguarded net from the edge of the area.

The Brazilian made no such mistake in the opening minute of the second half, as he rounded Pickford and fired home after being played in on the left side of the area by Gray.

The hosts responded with Gomes keeping out a Gylfi Sigurdsson effort form ten yards, before also getting a crucial finger-tip to the resulting cross, being injured in the process and having to be replaced by Orestis Karnezis.

That change did little to disrupt the Hornets who went 2-0 in front as Jose Holebas hoisted in a corner from the left and Christian Kabasele rose highest to head home into the far corner of the net.

Everton were back in the game a couple of minutes later as Oumar Niasse managed to scramble the ball home, following a mix-up between Holebas and Karnezis.

And it was 2-2 16 minutes from time as Baines swung over a corner from the right and substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin powered home a header at the far post.

In the final minute of normal time, the home side were awarded a penalty as Holebas slipped and sent Aaron Lennon crashing, leaving Baines to coolly slot home from the spot.

However, ten minutes into stoppage time Watford got a penalty of their own as Richarlison was felled, only for former Everton man Tom Cleverley to sidefoot well wide of the upright from 12 yards out.
