EPL: Newcastle v Bournemouth preview

Newcastle v Bournemouth preview

Newcastle have impressed upon their return to the Premier League and they will be looking to add to Bournemouth's woes on Saturday.

The Magpies are currently ninth in the league standings and they have performed particularly well at St James' Park of late, winning three and drawing one of their last four top-flight games on home soil.

However, Rafael Benitez' side were beaten at Burnley last time out and they also suffered a 3-1 humbling at the hands of Bournemouth when the two sides last met in March 2016.

Midfielder Mikel Merino will once again miss out due to a back issue, while the contest will come too soon for Paul Dummett, although he has resumed first-team training following a hamstring problem.

Bournemouth will head into the contest second-bottom of the league standings, although they did win their last away match in the top-flight, seeing off Stoke 2-1.

Eddie Howe's side are beginning a potentially season defining run of fixtures, as following the trip to St James' they will face further matches against Huddersfield and Swansea, two of the teams that are expected to be in around the relegation fight come the end of the season.

The Cherries will have to do without the services of Benik Afobe and Junior Stanislas for the trip to Newcastle, as they have been ruled out with respective thigh and groin injuries, although Callum Wilson could earn his first league start since January, as he steps up his recovery from a serious knee issue.
