EPL: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 West Brom

Harry Kane cancelled out Salomon Rondon’s early strike

Harry Kane cancelled out Salomon Rondon’s early strike as Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by battling West Brom at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side had the better of the possession and chances but were left frustrated as they struggled to break down a dogged West Brom rearguard.

In contrast, it was an impressive result for Gary Megson, who was taking interim charge of West Brom for the first time following the sacking of Tony Pulis.

The Baggies were looking to end a run of four successive defeats and made the perfect start, taking the lead after just four minutes.

Rondon ran on to Jake Livermore’s through ball, shrugged off the attentions of Davinson Sanchez and slid the ball into the bottom corner, with Hugo Lloris unmoved.

Tottenham struggled to create many clear-cut chances in response, with the Wembley crowd growing increasingly agitated.

Much of that frustration was directed at West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster who looked to be slowing the game down at every opportunity.

Kane had Tottenham’s first decent chance when he collected Christian Eriksen’s pass, turned on to left foot and shot just wide of left-hand post.

Son Heung-min then belatedly brought Foster in action when he fired in a dipping effort from the edge of the box that was well pushed away by the former England goalkeeper.

Just before the break, Kane got on to the end of a dangerous cross from the left by Son but it wasn’t enough to divert the ball towards goal.

West Brom were offering little and were content to sit deep and frustrate Tottenham. However, it was the Baggies who had the first opportunity of the second half when Matt Phillips cut in from the right and curled a left-footed effort just wide

With frustration growing around Wembley, Tottenham finally found the equaliser with 16 minutes remaining.

Dele Alli crossed towards the near post from the right and Kane forced the ball home left-footed for his ninth league goal of the season

Kane came close to putting Tottenham ahead moments later when he met Kieran Trippier’s cross but the England striker’s header went over.

Tottenham were piling forward in search for a winner but were nearly caught on the counter-attack in stoppage-time.

The lively Phillips broke free down the right and fizzed in a dangerous cross that Rondon couldn’t divert towards goal.
