EPL: Watford 2-0 West Ham United

Will Hughes gave Watford the lead with his first goal for the club

Watford condemned David Moyes to defeat in his first match as West Ham boss thanks to goals from Will Hughes and Richarlison.

The hosts grabbed a goal in each half as they recorded a fairly comfortable win against the Hammers, who remain in the relegation zone.

Midfielder Hughes scored his first goal for the club since his summer arrival from Derby County on 11 minutes after a poor clearance from Aaron Cresswell.

The ball fell kindly to Andre Gray who controlled well but then scuffed his own shot into the path of Hughes, who managed to slot it home from close range for his first Premier League goal.

Richarlison and Kiko came close to extending the Hornets' lead in the first half but West Ham could have been level at the break had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping from Heurelho Gomes.

The Watford stopper blocked a Cheikhou Kouyate strike from from close range and in first-half injury time pulled off an improbable double save to deny Marko Arnautovic.

The Austrian saw a header saved by Gomes but managed to get to the rebound, only for the keeper to get a leg to his second effort to ensure Watford went into the interval with a 1-0 advantage.

The Hornets started strongly in the second half and Gray sent an effort just wide, before Kouyate blazed over the crossbar for the visitors.

Joe Hart produced an excellent stop to deny Adrian Mariappa on the hour mark but minutes later that fine work was undone as he should have done better with Richarlison's effort.

The Brazilian beat Winston Reid and managed to get a shot away, Hart should have been able to push the ball away to safety but palmed it into his own net to gift Watford a 2-0 lead.

The second goal appeared to take the fight out of the Hammers and Watford could well have added a third in stoppage time but Richarlison shot wide.

West Ham occasionally showed some spirit but in truth there were few positives for Moyes to take in his first match in charge and the Scot was also dealt an injury blow as Arnautovic was forced off with a wrist injury in the second half.
