EPL: Bournemouth 4-0 Huddersfield Town
Callum Wilson scored a hat-trick as ten-man Bournemouth thrashed Huddersfield Town 4-0.
Wilson, who suffered the second ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury of his career in January, scored his first goals of the season as the Cherries, who had Simon Francis sent off in first-half stoppage time, moved four points clear of the relegation zone.
It was the visitors that started the match well, however, and they created the first opening in the sixth minute when Rajiv van La Parra’s 25-yard shot was gathered by Asmir Begovic.
The Bournemouth goalkeeper than did well to keep out another effort by the 26-year-old Dutchman before Scott Malone blasted a shot narrowly wide.
The Terriers continued to dominate and Aaron Mooy went close with a cross-cum-shot as Eddie Howe’s side struggled to get a foothold in the match.
However, against the run of play, the Cherries took the lead in the 26th minute when Wilson headed home from Jordon Ibe’s pinpoint corner.
And Wilson scored again six minutes later when poor defending by the visitors at an Andrew Surman free-kick allowed the Bournemouth striker to fire home from ten yards out.
Town seemed dejected and they almost conceded another goal just before the break when Surman was denied by Jonas Lossl’s finger-tip save.
The visitors were handed a lifeline in first-half stoppage time when Francis was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
David Wagner’s side had appeals for a penalty waved away by the referee on the hour mark when the ball seemed to strike Nathan Ake on the arm while Tom Ince’s shot from the edge of the area was blocked by Adam Smith.
However, Bournemouth added a third goal in the 69th minute when Malone was dispossessed by Harry Arter who turned and drilled a low shot past Lossl.
Wilson completed his hat-trick with six minutes left when he drove the ball into the corner of the net after being set up by Josh King.
