EPL: Huddersfield Town 2-0 Brighton

Steve Mounie

A Steve Mounie brace secured a valuable win for Huddersfield over lacklustre Brighton at the John Smith's Stadium.

This was the first top-tier meeting between the two clubs and the history books will show a Huddersfield win that they thoroughly deserved.

A Mounie double did the business for the West Yorkshire outfit who collected their fifth win of the season to move further away from the relegation zone.

It will be Mounie who will quite rightly attract the plaudits for his well-taken goals but there were impeccable performances all around the park for Huddersfield.

Elias Kachunga further enhanced his reputation as one of the premier workhorses in the division with a stunning display while Collin Quaner and Thomas Ince provided a creative spark that had been missing for David Wagner's men in recent weeks.

Mounie's first strike arrived after only 11 minutes when he was quickest to react to Chris Lowe's flick from a corner. The Benin international deflected the ball in off his knee for a simple finish to hand the Terriers a worthy lead.

Brighton never really showed up for a fixture they would have earmarked as a game they could win. Jonathan Hogg's expert stifling of Davy Propper in the heart of midfield muzzled any momentum they tried to build, and without their talisman they turned in a lacklustre display.

Glenn Murray, in red-hot form leading into the fixture, was a bystander for the majority of the match.

Australian goalkeeper Matt Ryan, another of Brighton's key men throughout their otherwise impressive start to Premier League life, was to blame for the second goal.

The Seagulls again failed to deal with a cross and, with Mounie's header falling tamely beneath the hands of Ryan, Huddersfield cruised into a 2-0 lead that they never looked like surrendering.
